Chapter 429 Leaning on Him
Chapter 429 Leaning on Him
"You're injured." Su Ming's voice was almost low and oppressive. "I told you to retreat first, why didn't you listen?"
Zheng Yaoxian didn't answer. He just glanced at Su Ming with a calm look, then lowered his head and said softly, "I'm here to save you."
"You saved me?" Su Ming was stunned, a hint of confusion flashing in his eyes. Zheng Yaoxian's injuries were serious, how could he save others? "What else do you want to do?"
"The enemy's pursuit is too close." Zheng Yaoxian suddenly tightened his grip on his weapon, a complex emotion flashing in his eyes. "I just circled around to try to hold them off for a while and buy you some time."
Su Ming's heart trembled. He looked at Zheng Yaoxian's always stern face, and suddenly an indescribable complex emotion surged in his heart. There was no fear in Zheng Yaoxian's eyes, only determination, even a look of unyielding.
"You are looking for death!" Su Ming said angrily in a low voice, but there was not much blame in his voice, but more helplessness and heartache.
"I can come back alive." Zheng Yaoxian still had that calm tone, as if nothing had happened. "You know, I can always survive."
Su Ming was silent for a moment, a complex wave of emotions welling up within him. Yes, Zheng Yaoxian had never let him down. He had always been there, fearlessly on every difficult mission. Zheng Yaoxian's tenacity and decisiveness had once been the backbone of the entire team. And now, this once calm and fearless warrior had found himself in dire straits because of his momentary negligence.
"You treat the wound first." Su Ming slowly lowered his body and stretched out his hand to Zheng Yaoxian's waist, ready to help him fix the wound.
Zheng Yaoxian didn't refuse, merely nodded gently, still showing no emotion. But those eyes seemed to see through everything, deep and calm, as if he had already seen through life and death. He said no more, as if all this pain and suffering were no longer his main concern.
Su Ming barely dared to linger on Zheng Yaoxian's wound. Though he tried to remain calm, anxiety surged within him. Zheng Yaoxian's life wasn't beyond saving, and his wound wasn't fatal. But he knew that if he didn't address it now, the enemy would likely seize the opportunity to launch a more violent attack. Time, for them, became even more precious.
"Just bear with it," Su Ming gritted his teeth, suppressing his anxiety as he began to carefully tend to Zheng Yaoxian's wound. Although he had some basic first aid training, the nervousness at this moment nearly made him forget all his skills. His movements were a little clumsy, but he tried to be steady, trying to make each step as accurate as possible.
Zheng Yaoxian glanced down at his wound, his eyes still cold, as if the incident had little to do with him. He said nothing, simply closing his eyes, a trace of fatigue on his face. His calmness and rationality almost made one forget that he was also a human being—an ordinary person who could feel pain and be hurt.
"Are you okay?" Su Ming finally couldn't help but ask in a low voice. He could feel his uneasiness rising, almost suffocating him.
"It's okay." Zheng Yaoxian's voice remained calm, as if the injury he had just suffered was insignificant. That familiar indifference, as if no hardship could touch his heart, "You still need time."
"We don't have time," Su Ming whispered back, his brow furrowed. "The enemy won't let us go. We must find supplies and a safe place to rest as soon as possible."
Zheng Yaoxian nodded slightly, without any extra expression on his face, but Su Ming knew that he must understand in his heart - in such an environment, where is the real "safety"?
After treating Zheng Yaoxian's wounds, Su Ming stood up, his gaze returning to its cold, clear state. He stared into the hazy darkness in the distance, as if searching for something. The sudden silence made his anxiety even more pronounced. Although Zheng Yaoxian had recovered quickly, Su Ming still dared not let his guard down. Any movement, whether from the enemy or the surroundings, could mean the difference between life and death.
Suddenly, a subtle sound, like a passing vehicle, reached his ears. It wasn't loud, but amidst the vast expanse of ruins, it was particularly jarring. Su Ming quickly crouched down, motioning for Zheng Yaoxian to remain silent. They both held their breath, the tense atmosphere hanging like a knife between them, imbuing every second with a sense of crisis.
"What's going on?" Zheng Yaoxian asked in a low voice, his eyes alert.
"I heard a noise, it must be someone." Su Ming lowered his voice and tried to remain calm. "We can't let them find out."
He quickly glanced around and pointed to a side road. This road was relatively hidden. Although he was not sure whether it could avoid the enemy, there was no other choice if he didn't try it now.
The two men moved sideways in tacit understanding, each step cautious. Su Ming knew that any careless movement would reveal their position. His heart pounded, yet his footsteps were unusually light. He felt as if he had completely blended into the dead silence of the night, like a cheetah lurking in the darkness.
As the noise grew closer, they finally spotted the slowly approaching truck. It wasn't large, and appeared to be transporting supplies. There were no obvious markings or markings on the truck to identify it. Su Ming knew this was exactly what they needed—a shipment of supplies that hadn't been completely controlled by the enemy.
An idea instantly formed in his mind - this car must be intercepted.
"Wait until they pass before taking action." Su Ming instructed in a low voice, a look of determination on his face.
Zheng Yaoxian nodded slightly, remaining silent, as if accustomed to this situation. His eyes were calm, reflecting a deep sense of reflection. This was what Su Ming trusted most: Zheng Yaoxian never failed to deliver at crucial moments. That composure gave him immense comfort.
The truck finally passed and gradually disappeared from sight. Su Ming waited a moment, making sure the enemy hadn't noticed them, and then immediately led Zheng Yaoxian to move silently in the direction of the truck's movement. They knew they had to close in quickly to catch them off guard.
The car wasn't moving very fast, and its windows were nearly shut, making it impossible to see inside. Su Ming's gaze was fixed on the truck's trunk, the most likely place for supplies. As he approached the truck, he took every step with extreme caution, fearing he'd step on any debris and make any unnecessary noise.
"Hurry," Su Ming whispered, his heartbeat accelerating. Every second was a brush with death.
Finally, they approached the truck's rear door. Su Ming paused, took a deep breath, and looked down at Zheng Yaoxian. Zheng Yaoxian frowned slightly, a flicker of hesitation in his eyes, as if assessing the situation. However, he didn't say much, simply nodded, indicating that he was ready.
"Get ready." Su Ming said softly.
Zheng Yaoxian made no unnecessary movements, simply slowly removing his gun from his back, ready to respond to any emergency. His expression remained calm, but Su Ming could sense that he wasn't as indifferent as usual. A heavy sense of fatigue and helplessness seemed to quietly emerge in the momentary silence.
"We can only rely on luck." Su Ming thought self-deprecatingly, but at this moment he had no more choices and this was the only way to go.
He yanked the back door of the truck and swung it open. The light inside was dim, but he could see a pile of packages, boxes, and sealed plastic bags. Inside those bags might be the supplies they needed most right now—water, food, even medicine.
"We need these," Su Ming whispered, and began to quickly move the supplies out of the car. Although these things might not be important to the enemy, to them, they were simply the continuation of life.
However, just as they were busy, suddenly, there was a movement on the side of the truck -
"Someone is coming!" Zheng Yaoxian glared and suddenly grabbed Su Ming's arm, signaling him to stop.
"Hurry, hide!" Su Ming growled.
The footsteps drew closer, and Su Ming's heartbeat grew rapid and heavy, as if the entire world were weighing him down. Every footstep echoed in his ears, hammering at his nerves. The air seemed thick and heavy, and every second felt like he was fighting an invisible storm. He lowered his body, trying to blend in with the car's body.
Zheng Yaoxian leaned close to him, their shoulders almost touching. At that moment, Su Ming felt a tacit understanding he had never felt before, as if all difficulties could be dispelled in this silent cooperation. However, even with Zheng Yaoxian by his side, he still couldn't ignore the impending sense of crisis.
"Hurry up and keep quiet." Su Ming whispered, his voice very low, for fear of being heard by the enemy.
Zheng Yaoxian remained silent, only nodding slightly. His expression remained calm, his eyes fixed on the footsteps ahead, as if he could discern the enemy's path and movements from each sound. He was no longer the doubtful newbie who had initially joined. Now, he was more of a wise warrior, as if he could handle any situation with ease.
However, just as they held their breath, the footsteps suddenly stopped. Su Ming's heart sank, as if the whole world had frozen in this moment of silence.
"He stopped." Su Ming said quietly, his brows furrowed, his eyes unconsciously scanning the surroundings.
Zheng Yaoxian frowned slightly, his expression unchanged, but a flicker of alertness flashed in his eyes. The tacit understanding between him and Su Ming had never weakened; even in this life-or-death situation, they could quickly reach a consensus.
"Wait for him to pass." Zheng Yaoxian suggested in a low voice, his tone still calm.
