Chapter 394: The Angel’s Resistances and Speed
Chapter 394: The Angel’s Resistances and Speed
Inside Malena’s house, she and Lisa had just finished their bath and were getting ready to turn in, when Ruth’s agonized scream jolted them awake, hearts thudding with alarm.
Then, with a thunderous crash, the front door was split open by a burning black greatsword, and a woman with flawless white wings—a breathtaking beauty—hovered in mid-air, her sapphire eyes as cold as ice as she gazed upon the mother and daughter.
That’s...an angel?
Malena stared at the angel’s beautiful silhouette, heart pounding wildly. She could feel her bloodline burning, as if some strange tie existed between them—compelling her to submit, to obey every command...
Then the angel turned her head and whispered, "Charm Person..."
Invisible magical energy spilled into Malena’s mind. Fear transformed into confusion; she wavered, then gave a vacant, slightly foolish smile.
Charm Person, 1st-level spell. As an ordinary woman, Malena stood no chance against its power. For the duration of its effect, she would be in this brainwashed state, ready to do whatever this "angel" ordered!
"Let her go!"
Theresa’s shout rang out from beyond the door. A massive guiding bolt blasted out, streaking straight for the angel’s head!
But Sulpharlo didn’t even flinch, lifting a hand so the bolt was swallowed whole by her palm, where a faint white light shimmered. It left her completely unharmed!
Outside, seeing this, Theresa’s face paled.
Of course, she knew: angels—extra-planar beings from Mount Celestia, blades forged by the gods to preserve order—were incredibly powerful.
They wielded radiant magical greatswords, possessed immense healing and restorative magic, and—perhaps most lethal of all—were the fastest flyers in the Multiverse.
Against such speed, even foes who might be their equal in raw power would fall to their blades.
Angels rarely clashed with mortals, so the Adventurers’ Guild gave no official challenge ratings for them. But by Theresa’s experience, their lowest possible challenge rating was thirteen—stronger individuals could easily be seventeen or higher!
The aura radiating from this angel left no doubt in Theresa’s mind: she was absurdly powerful.
But there was an even tricker part to fighting an angel than just their speed. They possessed incredible resistance to radiant damage!
Even fallen, those traits persisted. This foe, standing before Theresa, was practically her natural nemesis.
This fight—already a daunting challenge—had suddenly become so much harder!
Why... is this happening?
Theresa’s scalp tingled. She’d considered and prepared for demonkind—fiends from the lower planes, who would be perfectly countered by her powerful radiant magic.
But she’d never once imagined the enemy would turn out to be an angel of Mount Celestia!
Theresa braced herself, while Sulpharlo, across from her, easily realized this "powerful spellcaster" only had a narrow range of magic at her disposal—none that posed much of a threat.
Feeling completely in control, Sulpharlo turned to Malena, speaking softly: "I am your ancestor. You are my descendant."
"Come with me, my child. Take this step and you and your daughter will know true happiness!"
Malena grinned vacant-eyed, took Lisa by the hand, and stepped forward, reaching out for Sulpharlo: "I’m willing to go with you, ancestor."
Holding her hand, Lisa looked absolutely terrified. "Mom, why are you saying that? You said you never would..."
Sulpharlo smiled, glancing down at her. "She changed her mind, so, Lisa, you’re coming too. Come with your mother, and with me..."
"Charm Person..."
She cast the spell again, trying to charm the girl. But Lisa’s eyes glazed over for just a moment—then instantly cleared. "No way! Mom would never leave Priest Charles!"
She had shaken off Sulpharlo’s spell effect!
Sulpharlo was stunned—and what happened next amazed her even more. The little girl clung to Malena’s hand, chanting an incantation: "Dimension Door!"
A 4th-level spell—Dimension Door!
Buzz—
In a flash of white light, both mother and daughter vanished on the spot—destination unknown!
Sulpharlo was shocked, but delight overtook her: it meant not only was Malena the near-perfect vessel she’d dreamed of, but Lisa was a rare prodigy as well!
Fate’s blessing—two perfect candidates in one night!
Quivering with excitement, she unfurled her wings and shot into the sky!
Dimension Door was limited—five hundred meters at most—so the pair had to be nearby. At her speed, she could find them in no time, grab them, and quit this troublesome place!
"Stop right there!"
Theresa’s shout came from behind, as Haste’s magic fueled her, turning her into a streak of lightning in pursuit of Sulpharlo.
On the ground, Hattie, Ruth, Sephera, and the other witches looked up at the two blurs streaking through the sky. As anxious as they were, there was nothing they could do.
They could fly, yes—but with no Haste, their speed was four times, even eight times slower than the angel. They simply couldn’t keep up!
Once again, the battle could only be left in Theresa’s hands.
In the air, Theresa gave no thought to conserving mana. She unleashed a devastating spell right at the angel: "Sunburst!"
8th-level spell—Sunburst!
A second sun erupted in the South Harbor District’s night sky—blinding light swept across the city, illuminating the ground for miles and engulfing Sulpharlo completely.
This was Theresa’s most powerful spell—enormously destructive and, just as crucially, almost impossible to ignore!
"Ugh!"
Even Sulpharlo grunted under the sudden force of an 8th-level spell. Resistant, sure—but not immune. The attack still left her with a serious wound!
