Chapter 58 A Splendid Journey: The Road to Success in the Republic of China – A Business and Love Af

Splendid Attire: Lin Fangfei's Journey of Struggle in the Republican Era

The legendary business and love journey of a poor but academically gifted girl in Republican-era Shanghai.

When I saw the representative of that foreign power appear before me, my heart sank, as if gripped tightly by an invisible hand. He wore that repulsive, smug smile, his eyes gleaming with calculation. I instinctively took a step back, only to bump into a stranger behind me. I turned around in alarm, only to see that everyone surrounding us had cold, indifferent expressions.

"What exactly do you want?" I tried to make my voice sound calm, but it still trembled slightly. Su Yao gripped my hand tightly, and I could feel the sweat on her palms. She was also very nervous, but she still forced herself to remain calm as she glared at the representative of the foreign power.

The representative of the foreign power slowly approached us. He was dressed in a sharp black suit, his shoes polished to a gleaming shine, each step making a slight thud that sounded particularly jarring in the quiet place. "Miss Lin, Miss Su, I've been looking for you for ages." His Chinese had a strange accent, sounding sarcastic and unpleasant.

"What you're doing is illegal. We were invited to attend the seminar," Su Yao said angrily, her eyes practically spitting fire.

He smiled dismissively. "Illegal? In this place, I call the shots. You were very uncooperative in China, but now that you're on my turf, you have no say in the matter."

My heart was filled with anger and confusion. "Why are you targeting us? What grudge do our textile factories and businesses have against you?"

He crossed his arms and paced slowly around us, like a wolf eyeing its prey. “Your textile factories and businesses are doing too well in Shanghai, affecting our interests. Moreover, if China’s textile industry rises, it won’t be a good thing for us.”

Su Yao and I exchanged a glance, and we both understood their sinister intentions. They were afraid that our growth would threaten their position in the textile industry.

Just then, an idea suddenly came to me. I moved closer to Su Yao and whispered to her, "Su Yao, we need to find a way to buy time; maybe things will turn around." Su Yao nodded slightly, indicating that she understood what I meant.

I took a deep breath and said to the representative of the foreign power, "Do you think this will stop us? Our textile mills and businesses have strong backing, and our workers and partners will not stand idly by."

He sneered, "Your backing? At this point, who can save you?"

I continued, “Don’t underestimate the unity of the Chinese people. Moreover, our companies are constantly innovating, and what you’re doing is just a waste of effort.”

His expression changed slightly, but he quickly regained his arrogant demeanor. "Hmph, no matter what you say, you're not leaving here today."

Just as we were at an impasse, we suddenly heard the roar of a car engine. We all looked in the direction of the sound and saw a car speeding towards us. The car stopped a short distance away, the door opened, and a man dressed in a Chinese-style robe got out.

Su Yao and I stared at the man in surprise. He looked familiar, but we couldn't quite place where we'd seen him before. The representative of the foreign power's expression turned grim when he saw the man.

"Who are you? What are you doing here?" the representative of the foreign power asked warily.

The man walked over unhurriedly, his steps steady and powerful. "Who I am is not important; what's important is that you must not harm these two ladies," he said in a deep, magnetic voice.

The representative of the foreign power snorted, "You think you can stop me? This is my territory."

The man chuckled. "Your territory? This isn't a place where you can do whatever you want. I've already notified the local police and some influential figures. If you dare to harm them, you won't have a good ending."

Upon hearing his words, the foreign representative's face turned extremely ugly. He hesitated for a moment, then said to his subordinates, "Let's go."

Those men released us and slunk away with him. Su Yao and I breathed a sigh of relief, and I gratefully said to the man, "Thank you, sir. Why did you save us?"

The man looked at us, smiled, and said, "I am a Chinese businessman living abroad, and I have been paying close attention to the development of the textile industry in China. I admire your hard work and perseverance, and I cannot stand by and watch you be bullied by these people."

Su Yao and I thanked him, and he then drove us back to the seminar venue. After this incident, neither Su Yao nor I were in the mood to continue attending the seminar. We decided to return to China as soon as possible.

On the ship back home, gazing at the vast ocean, I was filled with emotion. This experience abroad made me realize that our textile factories and enterprises face not only domestic competition but also suppression from foreign powers. We must work even harder to enhance our capabilities.

Back in Shanghai, I told Gu Zixuan about my experience abroad. His eyes filled with worry and anger. "Fangfei," he said, "we can't continue like this. We need to take the initiative, expand our market, and take our textile industry to the world stage."

I nodded. "That's what I think too. But how do we do it? Our funds and technology are still limited."

Gu Zixuan pondered for a moment and said, "We can unite with other textile factories to develop together. By integrating our resources, we will have more strength to meet the challenges."

I thought it was a good idea, so we started contacting other textile factories. In the process, we encountered many difficulties. Some factories were afraid of being acquired by us and were unwilling to cooperate; others imposed very harsh conditions.

However, we did not give up. We visited them one by one, explaining our plans and objectives. Finally, several textile factories agreed to cooperate with us.

We began to integrate resources, jointly develop new technologies, and design new products. I spent all day busy in the design studio, wearing a light pink cotton cheongsam, my hair simply tied up, intently sketching designs on paper. My eyes shone with excitement and anticipation; I hoped our new creation would cause a sensation in the market.

Gu Zixuan was responsible for managing and coordinating the relationships between the various textile factories. He frequently traveled between the factories, his leather shoes covered in dust, but he always wore a determined smile.

Su Yao is also helping to promote our new plan. She is using her connections to promote our collaboration concept and new products in Shanghai's business and social circles.

Just as our plans were progressing smoothly, we discovered a new textile product on the market that was very competitive in both quality and price, which greatly impacted our new plans.

I held the new textile product, examining it closely. My brow furrowed, my mind filled with questions. "Where did this product come from? Why did it suddenly appear on the market?"

Gu Zixuan was also worried, "This could be a new product launched by our competitors, and they are trying to suppress our new plans."

We began investigating the product's origin. After some investigation, we discovered that the product was manufactured by a mysterious new company. This company was newly established, but appeared to have strong financial backing.

We decided to visit this company to see what they were all about. When we arrived at their office, we found it looked quite ordinary, yet it had a mysterious atmosphere.

We entered the company and asked to see the person in charge. A secretary led us to an office where a young man was sitting. He looked handsome, but there was an inscrutable look in his eyes.

"Hello, I'm the person in charge of this company. How can I help you?" he asked with a smile.

I looked at him and asked directly, "The textile products you produce have had a significant impact on our business. Why are you doing this?"

He smiled and said, "The business world is like a battlefield; this is normal competition. Moreover, our products have their own advantages, and this is the market's choice."

Gu Zixuan stepped forward and said, "Your sudden entry into the market, and with such a strong focus, must have some purpose."

The young man's smile vanished, and he looked at us, saying, "You're overthinking it. We just want a piece of the textile industry pie."

As we were talking, I noticed a painting hanging on the office wall that looked very familiar. Upon closer inspection, I realized it was exactly the same painting as the one in the office of the foreign power that had been targeting us.

My heart skipped a beat. Could this company be connected with that foreign power?

That painting, like a secret signal hidden in the darkness, sounded an alarm in my heart. I stared wide-eyed at the painting on the wall, the same painting in the foreign power's office constantly flashing through my mind. My heart raced uncontrollably, and a strong sense of unease welled up inside me.

I tried to calm myself down and looked at the young man, attempting to find a clue in his expression. He seemed to sense my unease, a fleeting hint of panic crossing his eyes, but he quickly regained his composure.

“This painting is quite special,” I said casually, but my eyes were fixed on his reaction.

He frowned slightly, then smiled and said, "Oh, it's just an ordinary painting. I saw it by chance in a small shop and bought it. I think it's quite suitable to hang in the office."

His explanation sounded reasonable, but I didn't believe it at all. Gu Zixuan, Su Yao, and I exchanged a glance; we both knew there was definitely something wrong.

Gu Zixuan stepped forward and said in a serious tone, "Sir, we hope you can tell the truth. This painting is definitely not that simple. We have reason to suspect that you have a relationship with a certain foreign power, and your production of this kind of textile product to disrupt our market must have some ulterior motive."

The young man's face darkened. He sat back slightly in his chair, his arms crossed over his chest. "Young Master Gu, this is baseless speculation. I've already said it's just normal business competition. You can't slander people without evidence."

I took a deep breath, walked to his desk, placed my hands on it, and looked him straight in the eye. "We'll find the evidence. Do you think you can just get rid of us like this? We've been fighting in Shanghai's textile industry for so long; we're not so easily defeated."

The young man looked at me, a hint of disdain in his eyes. "Ms. Lin, don't be so confident. This market belongs to everyone; whoever has the ability can secure a place. Do you think you can rest easy just by uniting a few textile factories?"

Our conversation with the young man ended unpleasantly. After leaving his company, Gu Zixuan, Su Yao, and I stood on the street, all feeling heavy-hearted.

“Fangfei, I think we have to investigate this company thoroughly. They must be hiding something,” Gu Zixuan said, frowning.

I nodded. "That's what I think too. But where do we start? They seem very cautious and won't let us find evidence easily."

Su Yao thought for a moment and said, "We can start with their raw material suppliers. If they really have connections with foreign forces, then their raw materials are likely to come from special channels abroad."

I think Su Yao's idea is good. "Then let's start the investigation now."
