Chapter 60 Delivering Supplies to the Safe Base
Chapter 60 Delivering Supplies to the Safe Base
When Lu Yuan came up from the underground parking garage, Zhong Qiang and Yang Xiao were already sitting at the dining table enjoying their beef noodles. A little while later, two Mercedes-Benz G-Class cars drove out of the underground parking garage.
After they finished breakfast, Lu Yuan and his companion chose a protective suit with two small fans on the back. The suit was a bit thick, but if a zombie suddenly pounced, it wouldn't be able to scratch them immediately, and it might not be able to bite through them. The key was that it had two fans, which was perfect for the weather of 40 or 50 degrees Celsius.
However, once they were out in their protective suits, they realized that the damn fan was completely useless. But there were fewer zombies at noon, and they were moving slower, so they could only take advantage of this time to set up the prefabricated house panels.
Following Gu Nanfeng's instructions, Lu Yuan took the prefabricated house planks from his spatial storage and placed them one by one at the original location of the yard fence. The other four people then had to work harder to secure them.
Gu Nanfeng didn't expect the board to stop the zombies; he just planned to use it to enclose the area first, and then build walls inside.
Soon, the prefabricated houses surrounded the villa, and the group breathed a sigh of relief, finally able to take off the cumbersome and unbearably hot protective suits.
Having gained experience in bricklaying at the safe base, the five of them didn't rest and started laying bricks right next to the prefabricated houses.
"Lu Xiaoyuan, why aren't there any pre-built walls in your space?" Yang Xiao asked, handing bricks to Zhong Qiang, who was higher up. He had just been relieved by Zhong Qiang. For safety, they had built three layers of bricks. Yang Xiao and Zhong Qiang took turns resting on one side, while Pei Sihao and Gu Nanfeng rested on the other.
Lu Yuan was in the middle, constantly carrying cement and bricks. At first, he took the pre-mixed concrete from his spatial storage. But there wasn't much of that; instead, there was a lot of unmixed stones and cement. Lu Yuan thought about what to do if he needed it urgently later, but since he wasn't in a hurry now, he started tinkering with it himself. Luckily, they had experience at the base and knew what proportions to use to make concrete. It was just a pity that his muscles, which were already sore from yesterday's trip, were even more sore now.
On the other side, Pei Sihao had just switched places with Gu Nanfeng and brought over two buckets to fill with concrete. He was so hot that he had taken off his shirt. Lu Yuan hadn't expected that Pei Sihao was the type who looked thin when dressed but was muscular when undressed. When he turned around, he bumped right into Pei Sihao with his eight-pack abs. Then, thinking that Pei Sihao might be the person from that night, his face turned red instantly.
"Lu Xiaoyuan, what's wrong?" Seeing Lu Yuan's face turn red immediately, Yang Xiao looked at him anxiously. Lu Yuan had fainted once last night, could he have suffered heatstroke again?
"N-nothing!" Lu Yuan touched his nose shyly and continued stirring the concrete on the ground, not daring to look at Pei Sihao again.
When Pei Sihao walked over, Lu Yuan had already lowered his head and didn't notice. He filled the two buckets and carried them back.
"Old Pei's body is amazing!" Yang Xiao, unaware that Lu Yuan blushed because of Pei Sihao's physique, was still commenting from an art student's perspective, "It's incredible! If our department had a model like that, how wonderful it would be! When will I ever have a body like that?"
Yang Xiao and Lu Yuan are both "pale, young and thin" types of boys. The difference between them is that Yang Xiao, being a sculpture major, has slightly more muscle in his arms than Lu Yuan, a history major.
Yang Xiao thought for a moment, then took off his shirt, revealing a hint of abs in his otherwise slender physique. He handed Zhong Qiang a brick while encouraging himself, "Get some more sun, get a tan, and you'll look tougher!"
While Lu Yuan and his team were busily engaged in infrastructure construction, Qin Yuan and Lin Yun's two truckloads of supplies arrived near the safe base. Just as they were figuring out how to deliver the supplies, they happened to run into the 0922 squad, who were returning from searching for supplies. This squad was now a combination of Lin Yun's original 0922 squad and Qin Yuan's original 0788 squad.
When the soldiers of 0922 saw their two former captains, they did not take them back to the base. Instead, they drove their supply trucks and took Qin Yuan and Lin Yun's two cars to an open area some distance away from the base.
After confirming that there were no zombies nearby, the soldiers got out of the vehicle and met with their captains to talk about the recent events at the base.
Qin Yuan and Lin Yun's newly formed 0788 squad went out to find supplies and did not return for a whole day. The next night, one of the dozen or so people in the base who had been locked up in the quarantine area suddenly turned into a zombie. He bit the other two people in his room, and the command immediately sent people to deal with them.
The remaining few people knew that the base could no longer accommodate them, so they secretly took a lot of food from the canteen under the cover of night, and also drove away in the G-Wagon that Gu Nanfeng and the others had brought.
Now, because their squad has the most members, the tasks they've been assigned are not easy. Just before they went out, one of their comrades was killed.
Today they found a convenience store, probably not open before the incident, filled with boxes and boxes of supplies. They quickly cleared away the surrounding zombies and were happily loading the supplies onto the truck when a zombie suddenly descended from the upper floor of the convenience store, straddling one of the soldiers' shoulders and biting his neck...
The young soldiers didn't want to recall what happened. They quickly dealt with their comrades and the zombie, loaded up their supplies, and headed back.
Although the convenience store had a lot of supplies, it would only provide enough food for the entire base for a few days. Qin Yuan and Lin Yun opened their car doors and trunks, directing the soldiers to load the supplies into their vehicles. The young soldiers were stunned; the supplies in these two cars were equivalent to what they had looted from the convenience store that day.
They were a little embarrassed, since the two captains were currently outside the safe base and it wasn't easy for them to get something to eat.
Qin Yuan stepped forward, intending to pat a former soldier on the shoulder, but the soldier instinctively shrank back. The new captain next to him smiled awkwardly. Qin Yuan and the others didn't know that some people had turned into zombies after the incubation period, but these soldiers had indeed experienced it at the base, and he could understand why they were afraid of him now.
"Move everything onto the supply truck. We'll be back in the next day or two, right here. You can come pick us up by car." Lin Yun noticed everyone's awkwardness and said to the new captain. This new captain was from their squad and had been with Lin Yun for many years. Hearing Lin Yun say this, he knew that Lin Yun and his team had found the large warehouse. Without being polite, he directed the soldiers to start moving the supplies.
"My walkie-talkie and Lao Qin's walkie-talkie have both been deactivated. Could you lend us one so we can notify you to come out and collect the supplies tomorrow? We'll return it to you afterwards." Lin Yun kept a little distance from the new captain, took out a pack of cigarettes from his pocket, lit one for himself, and tossed the whole pack to the other man.
The new captain took the cigarette, then beckoned to a young soldier, took his walkie-talkie, and tossed it to Lin Yun. "Captain Lin, Commander Wang is the only one holding the base together right now, which is really tough. We can't do anything about it; we can't add any more burden to the base."
After the animal attack on the base, Wang Qiang effectively sidelined the provincial command center. Now, he oversees everything, big and small, at the base, and personally handles all matters requiring communication to other cities and counties. Seeing that Lin Yun and Qin Yuan are both alive and well, everyone in the team longs for their captain to return. However, remembering the zombies that day, they dare not add to Wang Qiang's burden at this time.
Lin Yun and Qin Yuan didn't speak, they just nodded, each lit a cigarette, and waited for the young soldiers to finish unloading the supplies from the vehicle.
